Surecan Newsletter 5
A reminder of what the SURECAN study is about:
To develop, pilot and evaluate a novel, person-centred, psychological intervention (“ACT+”), based on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for people who have completed a hospital-based course of treatment for cancer with curative intent but experience poor quality of life.

One of the unexpected benefits from taking part in this SURECAN study is the positive impact that following the ACT+ approach has had on my own well-being. The simplicity of this intervention makes it accessible, relevant, and realistic for clients and if so for them, why not me?
I have worked as a therapist for Cavendish Cancer Care in Sheffield since 2015 both at our centre and our outreach hospital services and I’ve been working with SURECAN clients since April 21. It may sound trite, but I consider facilitating these sessions to be a huge privilege. I find it humbling to witness clients’ willingness to try something different, to be honest and very often to find the humour when reflecting whether X is working or not!
Another pleasant surprise has been the effectiveness of telephone therapy. Initially I was not keen but then a client opted for it, and I put aside my misgivings and several clients have since told me that they have been more open and honest because I will never physically see them. I found that this ‘anonymity’ seemed to sharpen my own focus and ability to connect to presence. As Leonardo allegedly said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication!
